REVIEW - Bristol Evening Post Tuesday April 22nd 1970 - LAUGHS, THICK AND FAST
Laughs came thick and fast in Weston-super-Mare Dramatic Society's production of I'll Get My Man at the Playhouse Theatre last night.
And, as the plot thickens, laughs came even faster, thanks to snappy acting and direction in this king-size farce from the pen of Philip King. For Terry Street, as the absent-minded vicar in search of a wife, there was lively applause from a first-night audience comprising a much larger than usual percentage of teenage theatre-goers. A situation in which ATV idol, played by Clive Darke and a pursuing popsie played by Pamela Linham seek sanctuary in a village vicarage, obviously appealed to the younger generation, and with the addition of a gusty Mrs. Barrington-Locke, played by Nan Hess, and a garrulous Mrs. Carter played by Joy Wilkinson, the appeal broadened out.
David Hemming, pontificated as the Bishop of Lax, and producer Brian Pike succeeded in keeping the whole pot boiling briskly enough for no one to realise just how thin were the contents. E.H.
REVIEW - Western Daily Press Wednesday April 23rd 1970 - PLAYERS TRIUMPH IN KING SIZE FARCE
Weston-super-Mare Dramatic Society in "I'll Get My Man," by Philip King, Playhouse Theatre.
Laughs came thick and fast thanks to snappy acting and direction in this king size farce.
For Terry Street as the absent-minded vicar searching for a wife, there was lively applause from a first night audience comprising a much larger than usual percentage of teenagers.
The situation in which a TV idol (Clive Darke) and a pursuing popsie (Pamela Linham) seek common sanctuary in a vicarage, obviously appealed to the younger generation.
By adding a gusty Mrs. Barrington-Locke, projected by Nan Hess, and a garrulous rompish Mrs. Carter, of the kitchen, played by Joy Wilkinson with evident enjoyment, the appeal broadened out.
Achievement
David Hemming pontificated as the Bishop of Lax - a part played by the author in the Bristol Old Vic production in 1966 - and producer Brian Pike succeeded in keeping the pot boiling briskly enough for no one to realise just how thin were the contents.
This in itself is an achievement for any amateur society tackling a farce - and should ensure good houses for the rest of the week. ERIC HOPKINSON
