About Weston-super-Mare Dramatic Society
Weston super Mare Dramatic Society was first established in 1867. (Click here to see relative newspaper articles.)
The first group performed 3 items over two nights on the 18th and 19th December, that year. (Click here to see the review of the first performances.)
Jump 51 years (from 1867) to the first of other known performances by Weston-super-Mare Dramatic Society. To date, no further research has been done to find out more about the interim period; that is something which will be done, once all the archive material to hand has been transcribed to this website.
1918 is the first year that we have documentation with regard to performances by the most recent Weston-super-Mare Dramatic Society. An extract from the programme of "Sweet Lavender" (1920) and other early Programmes reads, "It was just prior to the performance of F.C. Burnand's comedy "Betsy" on the 10th January, 1918, at the Whitecross Hall, that the Weston-super-Mare Amateur Dramatic Society found its name".
In 1953, a newspaper article in the Weston-super-Mare Mercury gave rise to much consternation; it was thought by the Society that they had existed since 1918 but, on researching the town's collection, the Borough Librarian found a photograph that suggested the Society existed earlier than 1880. The photograph shows Society members posing for the camera in 1870! (Click here to see the relative newspaper article.)
Our Society have performed at various venues in Weston-super-Mare - The Powell Assembly Rooms, The Whitecross Hall, The Knightstone Pavilion Theatre, The Palace Theatre, The Grand Pier Pavilion, The Queen's Hall, The Winter Gardens Pavilion, Weston Grammar School, The Weston Playhouse and The Theatre in the Hut - during the years. We've also performed at venues in nearby Clevedon and at the Theatre Royal in Bristol.
Sadly, since the mid-2000's, Weston Dramatic Society has existed in name only. There is always the hope that the Society will resume presenting shows in the future, rich in the knowledge that it has a wealth of history to draw on.
